Impressive!

May 10, 2010

You may or may not know that Brisbane has a very strong local printmaking community which runs under the name of ‘Impress Printmakers’ Studio, Brisbane’ (a not-for-profit group with open membership to the community).  I’m a member and can now reveal that our group has managed to secure from council the Kedron Park Substation (pictured above) as our new home!  It is an extremely exciting event which has taken over two years for a specially organized committee made up of our president and a few key members to get off the ground.  Thanks must go to Brisbane City Council and everyone who has helped (and supported us – you know who you are!) along the way.  Apparently there were over 80 applications for the space so it was really quite an achievement to even make it into the final selection round let alone secure it.  It means that Brisbane will finally have an official home for it’s print community (and somewhere for all our presses to live!).  If you are curious, similar set-ups include the Firestation Print Studio in Victoria, Warringah Printmakers Studio in New South Wales and Hunter Island Press in Tasmania (to name a few).

More exciting news to follow this week but in the meantime, the Redland Art Gallery at Cleveland is showing some beautiful paper and photography work at the moment.  ‘Thomas Spence: 35 Years of Expressing the Inexpressible’ showcases the career of a very talented drawer while in ‘Departure: Contemporary Photography,’ the works of three emerging photographers is on display.  A somewhat kooky show (in the best possible way) and I left very reluctantly, having seriously contemplated buying one of Imogen MacDonald’s photographs.

Thanks KT, everyone worked very hard on it, especially our President and the Substation Committee. I’m very proud of the outcome and it will be great to have Impress closer to where I live!!
